Ajaccio with Ferry to Marseilles

Napoleon - The hero and son of Ajacco, Corsica

Ajaccio

This was our last stop on French soil. Ajaccio, the birthplace of Napoleon, breathes elegance and sophistication within its pastel-shaded pavement cafés, and gracious squares. Ajaccio is the captial of Corsica and the island's largest city. Its modern history is dominated by the figure of Napoleon, who was born in the city. His presence is everywhere in Ajaccio, yet not in an overpowering sense; the city wears its layers of history with a light touch. This is evidenced in the narrow streets and the various architecture, particularly the fabled cathedral. We walked almost the entire town checking out the shops and what they had of interest. The city also has a beautiful harbour area filled with an assortment of boats and yachts, arriving from French and Spanish ports such as Marseille, Nice and Toulon.  This may be one of the spots where the rich and famous hang out from Europe ?  The beaches are flanked by oak and olives trees. Ideal for walkers , tourist and lovers.

There is nothing not to like in Corsica except maybe driving in the fog covered mountains. Definitely an adventure for us. We managed to tour some of the most beautiful and historic ares of this island. We drove it from end to end. Ajaccio is by far the most populated city on the island but nothing compared to the size of cities on the continent. We enjoyed the people, history, architecture, cruising around and getting out in the rugged areas and of course sampling the food in between. For us this was another great stop  along the way.
