Cordes-sur-Ciel & Chateau de Beynac & Sarlat, France

AT BOTTOM CLICK ON OLDER POSTS TO SEE SARLAT

Another quick trip of 138 miles or so to check in at the Hotel La Metairie next to another great medieval town, Cordes - Sur Ciel for 2 nights. This fortified town was built in 1222. Think about that almost 800 years old and it still holding up. The citizens of Cordes, having built their homes within the original 13th century ramparts, later escaped heavy damage during the religious wars at the end of the 16th century. As a result some excellent examples of 13th and 14th century gothic architecture have been preserved. Many of the photos below speak for themselves, i.e. church.

As in previous tours we work the winding hilly stoned streets investigating everything we can for fun and something unusual of course. We divide and conquer to make sure we all get our interest satisfied. Being off season many of the shops are closed but fear not we found plenty. another eating and shopping success. Cordes has more gargoyles than we have seen in the other towns. Unusual menacing looking animals  mounted on the top and side of building. I suspect in the 13th century they believed they warded off evil ? They are entertainig for sure and have caught my interest. Cordes is home to the Museum of the Art of Sugar and Chocolate and there is chocolate here from candy to statues. We enjoyed this stop and now are looking forward to the next adventure at Albi.
