Ostia Antica

Ostia Antica is a large archeological site, close to the modern suburb of Ostia (Rome) that was the location of the harbour city of Ancient Rome, which is approximately 30 km to the northeast. "Ostia" in Latin means "mouth". At the mouth of the River Tiber, Ostia was Rome's seaport, but due to silting the site now lies 3 km from the sea. The site is noted for the preservation of its ancient buildings, frescoes and impressive mosaics. Ostia may have been Rome's first colony. An inscription says that Ostia was founded by Ancus Marcius, the semi-legendary fourth king of Rome, in the 7th century BC.  The city was plagued with piracy and much of the artifacts were taken by the pirates and later Roman architects to use in the construction of Rome. Also during excavations the museums collected statues , mosaics and what ever they could to preserve the importance of this city. We spent half the day walking in and out the ruins trying to imagine what it must have looked like in its day. Not an easy undertaking but it is amazing that it still is standing. Many of the ruins are labeled who lived there or what is was used for. There are many taverns and hot tub bathing areas. From the information plaques it sounded like a party place to me aside from the economic status it had. Ostia is another example on how intelligent the people were 2000 years ago.
